Sometimes, we feel uncertain about daily and future life. In my case, at 18 y.o. I feel anxious about my choice to take a gap year phase before I get into college. I take a gap year to prepare myself for the next step in life, and it’s all about maturity.

Before taking a gap year, I was not academically competent at school because I was sluggish with learning. I play a gadget game every time I can because it is entertaining. So, without games makes me feel frustrating. I feel bored at a particular time. I do it for myself; I call that freedom power young people, LOL.

Everything almost didn’t change until I took a gap year and found one reading about ‘Dopamine Detox.’ This thing made me realize many truths of life. I learned something new that I didn’t learn in the past.

Dopamine Detox is a method that everyone can use to prevent lousy habits. This method tells you to postpone your happiness for a moment for a bigger purpose. In my case, my joy came from my achievements in the game. Finishing checkpoints can make me feel happy, and this pushes me to do it again.

The medical world knows that the dopamine hormone is a chemical compound in the brain that plays a role in conveying stimuli throughout the body. This hormone affects various human activities, from the ability to remember to move the limbs. Dopamine is also known as the emotion control hormone. When released in the right amount, this hormone will improve mood and make people feel happier. Conversely, a lack of the hormone dopamine will make you feel bad and can even increase the risk of depression.

So, when I finish the checkpoint of my game, the dopamine hormone increases in my brain, making me feel happy. Dopamine also increases when we do activities that are fun for us, like physical exercise, reading a book, watching a film, stalking a person that we like, looks people eating, feeling loved, getting appreciation, and others. Every dopamine hormone gives us a stimulus; we feel more enthusiastic about doing an activity.

Unfortunately, when happiness comes from something less productive, it can destroy us. In my case, I am playing gadget games too much. As a result, if I am doing something normal like learning mathematics to prepare for preparing exam, it feels boring because before I do this, I could finish every checkpoint in a minute. Still, when I learn math, I feel upset because I feel stuck whenever I try to solve a problem. Dopamine hormone can’t instantly fill me like when I finish a game. The bad news is that we can’t directly increase our dopamine by doing things that we find boring.

‘Dopamine Detox’ method tells us to reset the little things that always give us happiness. What I mean little things in there are less productive habits like playing gadget games, scrolling social media, clicking online shop promos, watching porn, and many others. Every time we give a thumb click to our smartphone, every time dopamine fills us, this can make us feel happy with small things not crucial to our life. Even though there is a purpose bigger in life that we can lead to getting there, like in my case, my exam preparation to get into a college can make my dream come true.

We must have our own big goals, maybe be a good programmer, businessman, the wealthiest person in the world, and others. All the above require extra struggle by learning maximally at all times. If learning feels boring, we must change our mindset to not be happy at small things and delay ourselves from small steps to self-reward. Say no to distracted small rewards like getting liked by followers, getting love mail from fans, and many things that can make the dopamine increase so fast and make us forget the important thing we should do. So, our minds can renew the meaning of life.

So, do you dare to do a dopamine detox by delaying happiness for a moment for a greater purpose?
